NHL Goalies that Made the Most Saves: Saros, Mrázek, Sorokin, Skinner & More

Petr Mrázek

Goalies are essential for the success of a team. If you want to win a Stanley Cup, get yourself a reliable man behind the mask, ideally two. The reigning champions, the Florida Panthers, have Russian warrior Sergei Bobrovsky. But what about the other teams?

Thanks to NHL EDGE, it is possible to measure who faced the most shots and had the most saves during the regular season. EDGE is a modern hockey technology that gathers pucks' and players' statistics.

Find out which goalies had the highest percentage of saves and who saved the most shots during the 2023-2024 NHL season. Some of them will definitely surprise you.

Ilya Sorokin

It's not a coincidence that the Nashville Predators gave Juuse Saros a long-term contract until 2033. This Finnish goalie faced the most shots during last season. He is 29 years old, and it's possible that Juuse will be one of the fundamental bedrocks in the future Preds' success. In the chart below, you'll find many fantastic goalies like Connor HellebuyckSergei Bobrovsky, or Ilya Sorokin.

NHL Goalies: The Most Goals Against in the 2023 - 2024 Season

You can take a goalie who played two or three games and teams scored on him plenty. But this kind of statistics won't give you the right perspective. This chart summarizes goalies with the most goals scored against, but they had respectable ice time during the NHL regular season. Alex Nedeljkovic of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Vítek Vaněček of the New Jersey Devils (now the San Jose Sharks), or Philipp Grubauer of the Seattle Kraken are certainly not very happy with these numbers, but at least they made it to the starting lineups of their teams.

Goalie  Team(s) Goals Against
Semyon Varlamov New York Islanders 69
Joel Hofer St. Louis Blues 72
Casey DeSmith Vancouver Canucks 80
Anton Forsberg Ottawa Senators 84

NHL Goalies: The Highest Saves Percentage in the 2023 - 2024 Season

The percentage of the saves is one of the most discussed and coveted statistic among hockey experts and fans. You can see how successful a goalie is in eliminating shots by just glancing at this stat. Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets has the edge here. There are also some surprises. For example, Joey Accord of the Seattle Kraken is a very reliable goalie. You can notice that the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins have both their goalies in the TOP 10.

Goalie  Team(s) Save %
Connor Hellebuyck Winnipeg Jets .921
Semyon Varlamov New York Islanders .918

NHL Goalies: More Interesting Stats from the 2023 - 2024 Season

There are more stats that can determine the quality of a goalie's performance. Jordan Binnington (St. Louis Blues), Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg Jets), and Alexandar Georgiev (Colorado Avalanche) have the most saves from high-danger shots. Juuse Saros (Nashville Predators), Ilya Sorokin (New York Islanders), and Petr Mrázek (Chicago Blackhawks) have the most saves from mid-range shots. And Hellebuyck, Sorokin, and Bobrovsky have the most saves from the long-range shots. Being a goalie is the toughest job in hockey, but at the same time, you cannot win the Cup without a great goalie guarding your net.
