4 Nations Face-Off Is The New World Cup of Hockey: Why Are Russia and Czechia Missing?

Hockey fans are excited and they have a valid reason for it. The 2025 4 Nations Face-Off is coming. What is it? It's an international men's ice hockey tournament featuring teams from Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States.

Scheduled from February 12th to Feb 20th, 2025, the event will be held in two iconic hockey cities: Montreal and Boston. The tournament replaces the NHL's annual All-Star Game for 2025 and showcases top NHL players representing their respective countries. It's the first time since 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, when the best hockey players in the world will face each other. We'll see generational talent like Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews and the others in action.

Tournament format is simple.  The competition will follow a round-robin format, with each team playing against the others. The top two teams at the end of the round-robin stage will advance to the championship game

Why is Russia Excluded from the 4 Nations Face-off?

The exclusion of Russia from the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off is a very sensitive issue, and it stems from a combination of factors related to both geopolitical and sporting reasons.

Russia’s exclusion from many international sporting events, including this one, is tied to the ongoing geopolitical situation. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many international organizations and sports federations have made the decision to suspend or ban Russian teams from participating in certain competitions.

In the wake of the invasion, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) suspended Russia from participating in many international tournaments, including World Championships and other prestigious events. This directly affects their involvement in tournaments like the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Many countries have imposed sanctions on Russia, which also impact the ability of Russian athletes to participate in international events. While Russian players are still active in the NHL, the NHL itself has been distancing from official Russian participation in international tournaments. The 4 Nations Face-Off is a subject to these same considerations.

To sum up, Russia's exclusion from the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off is a reflection of ongoing international sanctions, political tensions, and the broader context of Russia’s participation in global sporting events. It’s an unfortunate reality for Russian players who are still playing in the NHL such as Ovechkin, Kucherov, Malkin, Barbashev or Kaprizov and would otherwise have represented their nation in this tournament.

World Cup of Hockey 2016: The Last One

The 2016 World Cup of Hockey was a highly anticipated event, marking the return of the tournament after a 12-year hiatus. It was organized by the NHL and the NHLPA (National Hockey League Players’ Association) and included eight teams. This tournament was particularly notable for the addition of a new team—the Team Europe, which featured players from countries not considered top-tier, such as Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, and Austria.

The tournament was structured similarly to the 2004 edition, with a round-robin group stage (Group A - Canada, Team Europe, Czech republic, U.S. and Group B - Sweden, Russia, Finland, Team North America) followed by semifinals and finals.

The final was a tightly contested battle between Canada and Team Europe, with Canada holding on for 3-1 and 2-1 victories in the best of three finals. The standout performances of Crosby and Price helped Canada cement their dominance on the world stage.

Why the World Cup of Hockey Matters

Both the 2004 and 2016 editions of the World Cup of Hockey are remembered for their high level of competition, with some of the best players in the world facing off against one another. The tournament is unique in that it combines the best elements of a team-based international competition with the top-tier talent seen in NHL play.

The addition of teams like Team Europe and Team North America in the 2016 edition brought fresh and exciting elements to the game, introducing new rivalries and adding depth to the competition.

2025 4 Nations Face-Off will include just 4 national teams. Without the reigning world champions from the Czech republic (Czechia is not considered as one of the best 4 hockey nations in the world via NHL perspective) and excluded Russia are emerging several questions if this tournament will bring a success to the hockey world. With the McDavid, MacKinnon, Eichel, Tkachuk, Barkov or Hedman, there is no need to be worried, the hockey fans will be entertained.
